WiTWA & UWA Movie Night: Picture a Scientist

March 24, 2021 @
5:30pm

Described as “Quietly Devastating” and “Confronting”, PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.

If you ‘ve ever wondered why female scientists are still a minority, this eye-opening documentary sheds light on the personal histories on these 3 women of science. Be warned, some of their experiences are quite confronting and explicit shows of harassment and gender bias.

Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

With many thanks to the University of Western Australia, for sponsoring the venue and screening of the movie, as well as the Western Australian Museum as supporting Partner. Whilst the movie itself is free, we have packaged networking, light food and drinks, as well as our mini-mentoring program into the event and have costed this into the ticket price.
