About Emma Tongue

Emma has degrees, in both Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture and 20 years’ professional experience. Her initial experience in the marine industry comprised of core naval architecture and mechanical engineering work for various ship building yards in Western Australia, including Austal Ships. In 2009 Emma began work for a small consultancy as a Senior Naval Architect for the offshore oil & gas industry, working for Companies including Woodside, Santos, AWE and Shell and Banks such as ING, DVB and SMBC. Emma is currently Project Design Authority for the Pacific Patrol Boats at Austal Ships. Responsibility includes the technical design of the vessel to meet Client specification, contract and national and international standards and regulations. The PDA drives and delivers the selection of equipment, production of drawings and technical documentation, supervises and develops team members, supports the production, commissioning and delivery of the vessel. Emma seeks to adhere to values of “do the job right”, a high regard for personnel health and safety and maintaining a positive working environment. Emma’s experience has always involved working in a team, whether with design colleagues, production, management/ admin, suppliers, regulators, surveyors or clients. She provides ECU students with a female role model as she lectures in Ship Design and Production, with her ability to delve into complex technical problems and develop solutions. Emma is happy to share her knowledge by mentoring younger engineers.
